A recent study conducted by Mister Auto has revealed the world’s best and worst cities to drive in. The study examined various factors that affect motorists, including infrastructure, congestion and driver behaviour to determine which cities have the safest and most dangerous roads. Other factors we also considered, including the number of cars per capita, fuel costs, air quality and public transport.
How Did the UK Cities Rank?
See below the UK’s major cities ranked in Mister Auto’s 2019 Driving Cities Index:

As you can see, Birmingham ranked as the best in the UK and 27th best worldwide. This was due to low congestion, high road quality and excellent petrol affordability. At the bottom end of the table, London ranked as the worst British city to drive in, sitting in the 70th position out of the 100 cities studies across the globe due to its high levels of congestion.
In terms of global ranking, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds, Belfast, Manchester and Bristol join Birmingham in the top 50 cities to drive in. On the other hand, Brighton and Edinburgh sit alongside London positioned in the bottom half of the global rankings.
What Does This Mean for Drivers in the UK?
Clearly, the UK is far from being one of the best countries to drive in when considering the roads in our major cities. Not one UK city was ranked inside the top 25 cities across the globe. Therefore, when compared against countries such as Canada who have 3 cities ranking in the top 10, and Germany who have 7 cities ranking in the top 25, the UK is seriously falling behind.
